About

Born in Oakland in 1982, Ambrose Akinmusire is an acclaimed avant-garde jazz trumpeter and composer who has paradoxically situated himself in both the center and periphery of jazz. He studied at Manhattan School of Music, University of Southern California, and the Thelonious Monk Institute, winning both the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition in 2007. His unorthodox approach to sound and composition has earned him Grammy nominations, Doris Duke awards, and recognition as a singular voice in contemporary music.

Music Style

Akinmusire's music restructures accepted notions of jazz through a chameleonic tone that can sigh, flutter, or soar, combining muscular, driving forward sound with intervallic leaps and phrasing that reflects his perpetual quest for new paradigms across genres.
