Barry Altschul
Free Jazz Architect
The Bronx-born drummer who helped define avant-garde jazz through Circle, Braxton, and six decades of fearless rhythm.
About
Barry Altschul (born January 6, 1943, The Bronx, NYC) is a free jazz and hard bop drummer who rose to prominence with Paul Bley and Chick Corea in the late 1960s. He was a cornerstone of the landmark group Circle alongside Corea, Dave Holland, and Anthony Braxton, and later anchored Braxton's celebrated 1970s quartet. After years in Europe, he returned to lead his own ensembles including the 3Dom Factor trio.
Music Style
Altschul's drumming spans — in his own words — 'from ragtime to no time,' blending deep roots in hard bop with explosive free improvisation. His power comes from subtlety: a tight, exceedingly well-defined touch that generates enormous momentum without overpowering the ensemble.
