Greg Lewis
Monk on Hammond
Brooklyn-based organist reimagining Thelonious Monk's compositions on Hammond B-3 with socially conscious jazz.
About
New York native Greg Lewis is a highly accomplished mainstay on the city's jazz, blues and funk scenes. Born into a musical family, he discovered jazz through his father's Thelonious Monk record collection and later studied at The New School's jazz program under mentor Gil Coggins. Lewis has become best known for his Organ Monk project, which reinterprets Monk's compositions on the Hammond B-3 organ.
Music Style
Lewis plays grandiose, florid Hammond B-3 organ with long sustains and dramatic sweeps, blending soul jazz, funk, and post-bop influences. His approach combines Monk's idiosyncratic compositional ideas with contemporary jazz sensibilities.
