About
Jerry Weldon (born September 27, 1957 in New York City) is a tenor saxophonist who rose through the ranks after graduating from Rutgers University’s Jazz Studies Program in 1981. He spent years in Lionel Hampton’s Orchestra, later became a charter member of Harry Connick Jr.’s big band, and has additionally toured and recorded with numerous jazz greats. Weldon also leads his own groups regularly around NYC and internationally, maintaining a steady output of albums and performances over his four-plus decades in jazz.
Music Style
Weldon’s style is soulful hard bop with a strong feel for groove and swing, often infused with organ jazz’s warm textures and bluesy expressiveness. His playing balances muscular drive with lyrical nuance and pays homage to classic tenor greats while forging his own voice.
