About

Mark Adrian Whitfield (born October 6, 1966) is an American jazz guitarist from Lindenhurst, New York, whose career began after graduating from Berklee College of Music in 1987. He has released over a dozen albums as a leader—on labels like Warner Bros. and Verve—and built a reputation through collaborations with many jazz legends as well as contemporary R&B and soul artists. In 2022, he won a Grammy with the Christian McBride Big Band for “Best Large Jazz Ensemble” for their album For Jimmy, Wes & Oliver, on which he played guitar.

Music Style

Combining the fluid single-note vocabulary of hard bop with the warmth and rhythmic feeling of soul jazz and R&B, Whitfield’s playing features bright tone, blues inflection, and a blend of technical command and expressive depth. He moves effortlessly between standards and originals, and between acoustic intimacy and electrified band settings.
