Mike Karn
Saxophonist Turned Bassist
A rare double-threat who evolved from a premier tenor saxophonist into one of New York's most in-demand first-call jazz acoustic bassists.
About
Mike Karn is a versatile New York musician who began his career as a tenor saxophonist with Ray Charles and Harry Connick Jr. In 2007, he transitioned to the bass, quickly becoming a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and John Pizzarelli's band. He is also a long-time faculty member at The New School.
Music Style
Karn’s sound is defined by a deep, hard-bop swing and melodic clarity. His background as a saxophonist informs a lyrical approach to the bass, emphasizing harmonic sophistication and a driving rhythmic feel.
