Rob Scheps
Saxophone Virtuoso
A towering voice in modern jazz, Rob Scheps blends Coltrane-like intensity with lyrical elegance across sax, soprano sax, and flute—whether leading his Core-tet, Big Band or solo projects.
About
Born in Eugene, Oregon and raised on Long Island, New York, Rob Scheps began studying tenor saxophone at age nine. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory. Since moving to New York in 1988, he has led his own ensembles, served on the faculty of Mannes College, been Principal Saxophonist of the Oregon Symphony, and collaborated widely across jazz, classical, theater and popular music.
Music Style
His music combines a robust, inventive small-group modern jazz approach with Big Band and compositional breadth, blending influences from Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Gil Evans, while also exploring funk, Latin, and classical textures.
