About
Steve Davis (born April 14, 1967 in Worcester, Massachusetts) is a leading American jazz trombonist known for his contributions to hard-bop and modern jazz ensembles. Raised in Binghamton, New York, he studied at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute and joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1989, before co-founding the sextet One for All in 1996. He has recorded extensively as both a leader and sideman and is recognized for his teaching work as well.
Music Style
Davis blends the tradition of trombone masters like J.J. Johnson and Slide Hampton with a modern, hard-swinging trio/quintet aesthetic — full-bodied tone, expressive articulation, and inventive harmony.
