About

Ertegun Atrium serves as the main public lobby of Frederick P. Rose Hall, opened in 2004 as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Named for Nesuhi Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records, the space was designed to offer expansive views and serve multiple functions rather than nightly headliner concerts. It is strongly related to the heritage of JALC’s mission to bridge jazz, education, and public culture. Today the Ertegun Atrium is used for receptions, festivals like Unity Jazz Festival, daytime or early-evening concerts, family music events, and free community performances. The physical space is large, open, and bright, with sweeping east-facing windows that let in natural light and offer views of the city skyline. It’s versatile rather than acoustically sealed—it functions as a lobby and event hall rather than a dedicated theater. Crowds are often diverse: families, casual listeners, passersby, and jazz fans. Key features include a large open lobby with floor-to-ceiling east windows, views of the city, and an airy feel rather than enclosed club intimacy. The music genres vary widely; jazz is part of its programming especially for family concerts, festivals, community-oriented shows, and sometimes larger jazz orchestras. Events are intermittent, often afternoons, early-evening, or festival slots; many are free or ticketed depending on special programming. Walk-in is possible for public or free events.
