About

Historically, the original Five Spot Café operated in the late 1950s and 1960s at 5 Cooper Square (and later 2 St. Marks Place), run by the Termini family. It was during this era that it became a crucible for avant-garde jazz, featuring residencies and debut performances by visionaries like Thelonious Monk (with Coltrane) and Ornette Coleman. Reborn as Five Spot Jazz at 231 E 9th Street in the East Village, the venue honors that legacy while creating its own identity. The space is intimate, with a full bar and food menu and sight lines that bring you close to performers; the sound quality is attentive, and the programming balances vocalists, small combos, piano trios, jam sessions, and risk-taking acts. Fans and longtime jazz attendees form the core crowd, though it welcomes newcomers who appreciate serious listening and good food and drink. The atmosphere is warm and stylish, with an East Village loft-room feel. The venue focuses on small ensembles—trios, quartets, vocal jazz, and modern/avant-garde leaning players. Live jazz is offered every night, with multiple sets per evening, and doors typically open by 6:30 PM. Reservations are available, and the venue is not ideal for loud conversation, more for fans who want immersion. Inspired by the original mid-century Five Spot Café, the venue also resembles other intimate East Village rooms like Smalls, Zinc Bar, and local listening bars more than large headline-clubs.
