Founded in 1904, NAMA is the oldest African-American musical organization in the United States. It began as the first Black music union, formed when the American Federation of Musicians Local 310 refused to admit minority musicians, so Harlem musicians built their own institution. Today the 130th Street clubhouse still hosts jazz sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights.
