Ornithology Jazz Club

Founded in 2021 by Rie Yamaguchi-Borden and Mitchell Borden—the legendary founder of Smalls and Fat Cat—Ornithology was born out of a desire to create a sustainable, musician-centric space in Brooklyn. It quickly established itself as a spiritual successor to Borden's previous ventures, focusing on the raw energy of live performance and the preservation of jazz culture in a rapidly changing neighborhood. The venue is a cozy, dimly lit room filled with lush greenery and vintage decor, creating a warm, living-room vibe for its nightly sets. While it functions as a serious listening room where the music takes precedence, the atmosphere remains unpretentious and welcoming to the diverse Bushwick community. The acoustics are specifically designed to highlight small ensembles, often featuring piano trios or horn-led quartets in a space that puts the audience inches from the performers. Ornithology Jazz Club features live jazz every night, including jam sessions, open mics, and experimental sets. The interior is intimate with low lighting, art on the walls, and multiple levels including a rooftop space. Crowds are weekday-cool and alert, with weekends buzzing as musicians often pop in during later sets.
