Jazz in Midtown Manhattan

From Birdland's bandstand to Jazz at Lincoln Center's three halls. The institutional heart of the scene.

Midtown's jazz scene clusters around the Theater District and Columbus Circle, with Birdland at the center. Named for Charlie Parker, Birdland has been staging world-class jazz on West 44th Street since 1949 (in various locations); the current room hosts two to three sets nightly and runs a classic Monday-night big-band residency with the Birdland Big Band. A few blocks north, Iridium on Broadway built its reputation on Les Paul's Monday-night residencies (he played there weekly until his death in 2009) and continues to book major guitar and organ trio acts.

Jazz at Lincoln Center, at Columbus Circle, is Midtown's institutional anchor. Inside Frederick P. Rose Hall are three concert spaces: Dizzy's Club (supper-club intimate), the Appel Room (middle-sized), and Rose Theater (formal), programming everything from JALC's in-house orchestra under Wynton Marsalis to touring headliners. The Jazz Gallery, a few blocks south in a loft space on Broadway and 27th, is more under-the-radar but books sharp modern composers.

Jazzcultural, a newer Theater District room on West 46th, programs nightly sets and has quickly become a dependable stop between Broadway curtains. Midtown also has quieter jazz pockets good for before- or after-theater listening: Tomi Jazz in an East 53rd basement, The Jazz Club at Aman New York tucked behind a private 56th Street entrance, hotel-bar series at the Carlyle's Bemelmans, and late-set options that skew earlier than the Village clubs. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Birdland still a good jazz club?
Yes. Birdland books two to three sets nightly of serious, well-programmed jazz. From the Birdland Big Band's long-running Monday residency to leading modern artists during the week. The current room on West 44th Street holds about 200 people, good sightlines throughout. Dinner-and-show format; reservations recommended for weekends.
What's the difference between the three rooms at Jazz at Lincoln Center?
Dizzy's Club (~140 seats) is supper-club intimate with a cityscape view. Dinner tables, two sets nightly. The Appel Room (~483 seats) is a mid-size concert space with the same Central Park view. Formal seating, single shows. Rose Theater (~1,200 seats) is the full concert hall for JALC's biggest productions. All in Frederick P. Rose Hall at Columbus Circle.
Where's the best pre-theater jazz in Midtown?
Birdland's 7 PM early set runs 7:00–8:30 PM, perfect before a Broadway curtain. Iridium's 8 PM set gives you time before most 8:30 musical curtains. The Carlyle's Bemelmans Bar piano trio starts at 5:30 PM. An even earlier option, with no cover before 9:30 PM.
